exhibition – scatola in scatola

After many years of sponsorship of Cultural Documents’s international programme by Scatolificio Stella, a cardboard-box factory in rural central-Italy, artists Elaine Shemilt and Richard Couzins were commissioned (by Cultural Documents in partnership with Scatolificio Stella Srl) to make new works which elaborate the relationship between territory, raw materials, physical energy, human decisions and products.

This presentation took Cultural Documents’s work beyond the familiar places of cultural venues and into the zone of industrial production: the twentieth anniversary of a cardboard-box production factory enabled us to present the two artists’ commissions with the people who informed their research and production.

Elaine Shemilt created two new works using a range of materials arranged in layers with imagery drawn from maps of the terrain surrounding Scatolificio Stella published in the book ‘Fifth Army at the Winterline’ which documents the militarisation of the terrain in 1943 and 1944.

Richard Couzins worked with the staff of the factory to film scenes which explored the concept of the box, creating a series of still-image works and artists’ films.

“In film the synchronisation of sound and image grounds realism but in the Scatolificio, sound intersects with the visible in different ways, creating abundant streams of audiovisual information. As the work proceeds, the sound of birdsong and passing traffic outside give way to the clattering thud of machinery within. In the film the real space of the factory is also a re-imagined space in which the artist both works alongside the employees and performs poetic interventions.”
